First off, a “casegood” is a furniture product made of a hard material, such as wood or metal.  We generally talk of ‘upholstery’ (furniture of fabric) or ‘casegoods’ (furniture of hard surface materials) and manufacturers typically specialize in one or the other, or produce these in different factories.

One concept sweeping the interior design industry is the “upholstered casegood”.  This type of product could be something like a wood chest with drawers which are covered in material and often nailheads, to cover the seams.  I just ordered an upholstered chest to use as a nightstand in a downtown loft project- I can’t wait to see how it turns out!

Here is an upholstered chest- shown in different fabrics and different painted wood trims.  You can completely tailor this piece to match the style of your home!

We saw quite a few upholstered casegood pieces at the Vanguard Furniture showroom and Amanda was thoughtful enough to pull together some examples of these products, as well as others, to show you how creative one can be with upholstered wood products!

Here are some the examples Amanda found and her thoughts on the topic:

We have all seen upholstered headboards and beds, but now the industry is taking it a step further! They are adding texture in every way possible. With the ability to add fabrics to our dressers, desks, and tables, etc., we are able to add a different texture and softness to every space.

Vanguard Furniture, a favorite upholstery line of Heather Scott Home & Design, has become very innovative with upholstered case goods and taken it to the next level. They have decided to let you customize your own upholstered piece! You can choose the nail head design you would like, the finish, and the nail head color. Here are some examples of what they offer.

After choosing the pattern, fabric, and nail head trim, you get your own customized piece of furniture! Below are a few examples of the finished product. clip_image016

What is more enticing than walking into a home that smells fabulous?

We just replenished our stock of Nouvelle candles that are blended, poured, and packaged by hand in southern Louisiana.

image

The large 24 oz. French urn is available for $39 and has 120-125 hours of burn time.

image

The grapefruit blackberry scent can be described as ripe luscious ruby red grapefruit blended with the tartness of blackberry and currant.  Scott claims it smells like blueberry muffins.  Needless to say, it is one of his favorites!

image

A popular scent for men is the mahogany & tobacco. It has the essence of rich mahogany wood intermingled with smoky tobacco.

The signature 8oz. glass candle is available for $25 and has a 60 hour burn time.

image

We have a variety of scents in this size including a customer favorite, paperwhite & honey. This scent can be described as narcissus blooms blended with soft notes of honey and vanilla.

image

We also have the petite 6.5 oz. French urns that are $14 and have 30-35 hours of burn time. The scent of linen will keep your home smelling fresh and clean!

There is no doubt that you will find a scent that is perfect for your home, so stop by and check out our variety of scents and sizes! We currently have in stock fresh linen, paperwhite & honey, mahogany & tobacco, crepe myrtle, Tuscan currant, grapefruit & blackberry, and English lavender.

Scott, Amanda and I just got back from 3 days of training in North Carolina.  We attended “Vanguard University” with Vanguard furniture, a family owned furniture company in business over 50 years.

Heather, Scott and Amanda in NC

The trip was fun and we met some great people from across the country who also have retail stores and design firms. The trip was not only fun, but also very educational. Vangaurd University crewI learned so much about the actual furniture building process.  I did not appreciate what ‘Hand crafted’ and ‘Made in America’ really meant until this week.

I’ve come to the decision for me, personally, that it is worth paying a little more to help support the hard working families and also the fine craftsmen of this country.  I am going to do my best to convince my clients likewise.

I learned some interesting tips related to:

1) Tufting

2) Selecting COM (Customer’s Own Material) fabrics for upholstery application

3) Hand applied finishes

and I plan to share some of these insights in the coming weeks.

Before then, here are some quick highlights from the factory tours regarding the usual “why does it cost so much to…” questions.  I have to admit I have asked all these questions myself, so it is with some embarrassment that I now have seen the rationale and share the answers.

1) Why does an 8 way hand tied sofa cost more than a sinuous spring sofa?  It isn’t just the quality that costs more, it is the time involved in providing you the quality:

8 way hand tied sofa base

8 way hand tied

2) Why are nail heads an upcharge?  Someone has to hand draw a line to follow then VERY steadily apply the nail heads in an even row.  With the coffee I drink there is no way I could do this job!

applying nailheads

3) Why is real leather more expensive than vinyl or fabric?  Can you imagine hand cutting every piece to make the best use of the hide?

hand cutting leather

4) Why does it cost more to buy a frame that has ‘finish options’ such as staining and painting rather than buy from a company that only has one finish choice?  Can you believe, every piece is hand sprayed or painted with a brush!

hand painting or staining the frames

Not only that, but they aren’t just adding one coat, but a multi-layer process that involves a quality check at each level to make sure the finish matches the wood chip that we agreed to purchase.

multi layer stain process

5) Why is a silver leaf or gold leaf finish so much more expensive than a painted or stained finish?  It isn’t just the cost of the materials! It can take up to 2 full work days to leaf a particular product depending on the size.

Why does it cost more for a sofa of the quality that we believe in selling?  Because it is made by hand in America and someone in a factory is hand sewing the bottom of the seat cover with a needle and thread so it looks perfect and smooth on the front and sides.  They sign their name to the tag that goes on this area saying they built the piece to a higher standard than required by law, and to a higher standard than many foreign countries.

The tours really were an eye opening experience.  Not just in quality and commitment to detail in hand crafting a product.  But also, for me, of a personal obligation to chose not to select disposable furniture but to select fewer, better products and support the companies committed to employing and strengthening our communities.

Seat yourself in these extremely stylish upholstered dining chairs! They are perfect for a breakfast room because of the casual linen fabric or a formal dining room because of the button tufted back.

image

They are featured in a gray linen fabric and have dark wood legs that are simple with minimal lines. These chairs are small in scale at 22”W x 26”D x 41”H.

image

They also have a stylish silver ring in the back as an added contemporary detail that can be used to pull out the chair.

We have 4 in stock and they are $445.00 each. These upholstered dining chairs can also be ordered in a cream linen fabric!

Something must be in the water in Austin.  I have five current clients that are pregnant right now.  We just finished a lovely little nursery for a girl, a little boy’s room and a gender neutral nursery.

I am going to start the “Baby Boom” series with the boy’s room and in the coming weeks I hope to get some better photos of the other baby rooms.

This room used to be a nursery and was transformed into a ‘big boy room’ as the next kiddo in the family was on its way!

Little Boy's Room

I just loved using navy blue and kelly green as a color combo for the room.  It is so crisp and preppy!

The walls were painted pale gray (from beige), a much larger rug was added, and with the new layout we were able to include not only a play table area, but also a kids sized aviator chair.

A trundle bed is going to grow with this little guy for years to come (he is almost 3, now)!  The chest will currently hold baskets of toys on the shelves (no messy room here) and a tall chest on the opposite wall will hold clothes (in addition to the walk in closet).

The little storage cubes were in the nursery before, we just re-upholstered them in an outdoor fabric from Trina Turk.  The play table was custom painted by Austin artist, Leigh Watson of Watson Design.

Didn’t she do an awesome job of pulling in all the colors of the room and adding a bit of the animal print we wanted to see?

I also managed to pick up this very neat piece of original art.  I had it framed in an inexpensive, ready made frame, to keep costs down.

On the opposite wall you can see there is still plenty of storage for a little boy in this little bedroom, as well as a wide open play space in the middle.

We just received these two mirrored side tables that are a mix of glamour and “chic-ness”.

Antique mirrors are on the front & top, sides & legs and the surrounding wood is finished in a silver leaf.

image

With the upcoming release of The Great Gatsby,  I think that the geometric pattern on the side panel gives it a 1920’s feel.

image

These side tables could also be used as nightstands and would look lovely beside a tufted upholstery headboard with a great pair of lamps to accessorize the room.

image

With storage capabilities, these side tables are extremely functional and are small enough to fit in a small space but large enough to be bold and eye catching. The dimensions of each are 16”D x 22”W x 29.5”L.

image

We have two in stock and they are priced at $379.99 each.

I was recently hired by a young and growing family to decorate the family room of the home they had recently purchased.  The family was ready to move their existing furniture up to the ‘media room’ and install an elegant but comfortable family room.

Luckily for me, the room already had nice bones and we had a clean slate.  The only ‘structural’ changes were the removal of the low hanging chandelier and replacing the existing built in bookcases with more practical cabinet doors and shelves.  The room also got a fresh coat of paint.

Living room from entry by heather scott home and design

This room is so pretty.  Very calm, collected and put together.  And, all the pieces are very good quality.  This was a mom who believed in purchasing quality pieces that would last.  So, how did we manage that?

The ivory colored sectional is covered in a crypton fabric.  If you haven’t heard about it, check it out.  You simply wipe it off with a washcloth and water to remove spots.

The side chairs were covered in teflon at the factory.  The ottoman is leather.  The silk drapes and oushak rug have both been stain protected to resist any spots or stains from dirty hands.   Now, mom did lay down the ‘food and drink stay in the kitchen’ rule, but as you can see in the photo below, the breakfast bar is directly behind the console table so that isn’t too much of a sacrifice.

The room also has a long wall opposite the windows.  Here we placed a lovely mirrored console table, with 2 custom ottomans (for extra seating), a pair of lamps, and an abstract piece of art.  Check out the embroidered fabric on the cube ottomans below.

I hope you like this peaceful family room.  Don’t be afraid to design for what you want your home to look like, not what it ‘needs’ to be like.  There are so many great stain repellent fabrics and stain protectors on the market now.  Don’t rule out what you want before you’ve thoroughly researched your options to protect your investment.  You will be happier with your home in the long run and after all, if it makes you happy, the family will be happy!

A dining table is the focal point of any dining room and this one is truly special!

image

This beautiful dining table is stylish, unique, and perfect for someone with transitional taste.  The table has a light feel to it with the polished stainless steel orbit base and is $3,149.00

At 48″D X 30″H, perfect for a smaller space and can seat up to 4 chairs.

The top is walnut wood with a triangular pattern laid out in the wood, giving it a unique flair!
