It amazes me how fast time flies.  I think it is even more noticeable as you watch children move from one grade up to the next.  This client’s room had been the ‘playroom’ at one point in time.  Now the girls are in junior high and high school and the family was looking for a space to do family movie night and hang out.

The “New” Media Room:

The goal for the room was for everyone to be able to pile onto the sofa and have a ‘good seat’ to watch a movie.  The homeowners wanted the room to be comfortable and cushy.  They also asked for the space to flow with the existing, traditional style of the rest of the home, but to have a little more punch and modernity.

Our jumping off point was a new family photo which featured the colors blue, white, fuchsia and gray.  I love it when a homeowner jumps out with a color like hot pink as an option.  We just had to keep it toned down so the man of the family felt at home.

We did that by basing the design off of a more masculine-hued rug and sofa. The rug is a super soft grey with silky accents of steel blue.  The sectional is a cozy steel blue velvet which is really plush.  We just piled it up with accent pillows in pink, white, grey and blue.

Notice the detailed, box nailhead trim at the ends of the sofa.  I think it adds a lot of style to the sectional.

One particularly fun piece is the swivel corner chair which we did in a basic beige linen, but trimmed with hot pink velvet cord.  So fun!

The ottoman is both functional and stylish.  We went larger and made it more like a bumper so everyone could easily put feet up and would not have to fight over the chaise.

The windows before had white, wood blinds which were inside mounted.  We added some panache to the interior architecture by outside mounting new natural shades and hanging drapery panels between each window.

When Emily and I installed the room we couldn’t stop ourselves from ‘testing’ out the couch, it was just so inviting!

I hope you like this space as much as the family, and I, did.  I am really pleased the parents wanted to invest in a space where the whole family could all spend more time together even as the kids become teenagers.   I have nothing against separate spaces for the kids, but it was heartwarming to be able to create a space for this family to enjoy fun times together!

I mentioned awhile ago about the “Baby Boom” happening here in Austin.  Supposedly 150 new people are moving to Austin everyday.  Well,  I think the locals are trying to stand their ground!  I have quite a few ‘expectant’ and ‘new’ moms at the moment.

One expectant client wanted a “surprise” and did not want to know the baby’s gender.  She did, however, want to have the nursery done when the baby arrived.  This was her second child and she had already had a boy before.  She said she felt like this one was a boy, too, but she wasn’t sure.

Obviously, she had thought a lot about her needs and wants for the room (including she didn’t want to deal with bumpers and a lot of baby bedding).

She was interested in using turquoise and lime green and felt that color scheme could go masculine or feminine.  We looked at some Serena and Lily bedding.  They showed this color schemes for boys and girls, which added a level of comfort to the approach.

Mom already had a sleeper chair in lime green she wanted to use and a pouf in turquoise.  I used those colors as the jumping off point.

The room was repainted in a neutral gray to lighten it up.  We had a swivel glider made in a lime zebra print with contrast welt in bright blue and added a gray and white pillow with elephants.  The little end table can hold a bottle if needed.

We did a crib from Newport Cottages which allows you to customize multiple colors on the bed.  We added a darker gray stripe around to bed frame.

The existing sleeper was punched up with some throw pillows in Thom Filicia fabric which features birds and a graphic design.

The floor lamp next to it has a custom finial with a little birdie on top.

Artwork for children is a challenge, especially if you don’t want to reveal the baby’s gender!  I found some great Peter Pan prints from the 1960’s and had them framed to go above the crib.  The other wall we hung a relaxing cloud scene that had all the colors of the room in it.

A couple of fun features for the room include:

1) A custom model we ordered from Etsy, where we chose the animals and color scheme

Custom mobile for baby's room

2) A changing pad spot we had custom built into the closet.  The room was pretty tight with the sleeper bed so we went for a tall piece that would offer storage and opted to have a ‘changing table’ built into the closet.  I thought it was a pretty nifty idea if I do pat myself on the back.  You only use it for a limited period of time, anyway.  The cabinet guy did a genius job on it!

3) The baskets for the storage unit we personalized by purchasing 2 colors of ribbon which we glued onto the liners to add some character.

Mom wanted the nursery done before the baby arrived.  We had it booked to install about 2 weeks before the due date.  But, as great as our plan was, baby decided to arrive early.  I received an email over a weekend saying, well, it was no longer a huge rush to get it done, a little boy arrived happy, healthy and early!

Something must be in the water in Austin.  I have five current clients that are pregnant right now.  We just finished a lovely little nursery for a girl, a little boy’s room and a gender neutral nursery.

I am going to start the “Baby Boom” series with the boy’s room and in the coming weeks I hope to get some better photos of the other baby rooms.

This room used to be a nursery and was transformed into a ‘big boy room’ as the next kiddo in the family was on its way!

Little Boy's Room

I just loved using navy blue and kelly green as a color combo for the room.  It is so crisp and preppy!

The walls were painted pale gray (from beige), a much larger rug was added, and with the new layout we were able to include not only a play table area, but also a kids sized aviator chair.

A trundle bed is going to grow with this little guy for years to come (he is almost 3, now)!  The chest will currently hold baskets of toys on the shelves (no messy room here) and a tall chest on the opposite wall will hold clothes (in addition to the walk in closet).

The little storage cubes were in the nursery before, we just re-upholstered them in an outdoor fabric from Trina Turk.  The play table was custom painted by Austin artist, Leigh Watson of Watson Design.

Didn’t she do an awesome job of pulling in all the colors of the room and adding a bit of the animal print we wanted to see?

I also managed to pick up this very neat piece of original art.  I had it framed in an inexpensive, ready made frame, to keep costs down.

On the opposite wall you can see there is still plenty of storage for a little boy in this little bedroom, as well as a wide open play space in the middle.
